Sam meets China’s Minister of Industry to discuss Macau’s new-type industrialisation

Macau Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai met with China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Li Lecheng, on Thursday to discuss advancing the city’s new-type industrialisation, promoting economic diversification through technological innovation, and supporting Macau’s integration into national development strategies, a Government Information Bureau indicated.

The meeting was part of Mr Sam’s five-day visit to Beijing, which followed his attendance at commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. During the trip, he also met with other ministries and Central Government committees to discuss sustained support for Macau’s economic diversification and high-quality development.

The SAR Government is advancing four major infrastructure projects, including a technology research industrial park aimed at strengthening the city’s innovation ecosystem and fostering economic diversification. Authorities are working on the park’s planning and preparatory stages.

Sam highlighted Macau’s intent to deepen collaboration with the ministry on technological innovation and industrial development, particularly seeking guidance on the park’s strategy, role, and talent development to achieve technology commercialisation and enhance the city’s competitiveness.

The Chief Executive also emphasised Macau’s role as a “precise connector” domestically and internationally, including its platform function linking China and Portuguese-speaking countries, contributing to national development.

ab25 The idea of university–industry partnership is a good one raised by Sam, but this requires authorities and leaders from all Macau universities to sit down and discuss with the government and private-sector corporations of not only Macau but also the mainland, notably those in the Greater Bay Area, how scientific research will be conducted, how Chinese medicine will be “westernised” and advanced further through innovative research, and how new patents will be developed in the South China region. Furthermore, Sam Hou Fai has encouraged Macau’s casino concessionaires to invest in the In-Depth Cooperation Zone, but the details will have to be delineated so that the mobilisation of private-sector corporations will be truly effective in Macau’s quest for economic diversification.
